TRIALOGUE: THREE ARTISTS IN VISUAL CONVERSATION
Deborah Weiss, Ann Mallory and Adam Waimon
Fairfield, CT – The Fairfield Arts Council (FAC) opens its new exhibition, Trialogue: Three Artists in Visual Conversation with Artist/Printmaker Deborah Weiss; Ceramicist Ann Mallory and Glass Artist Adam Waimon on Wednesday, March 24, 2010. The exhibition will run through Wednesday, April 21, 2010. FAC’s opening reception will be held on Friday, March 26, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 where we will celebrate the beautiful works of art of these very talented artists. Don’t miss our brown bag luncheon discussion on Thursday, April 8, 2010 from 12:30-1:30pm where you will again have a chance to meet the artists and discuss their works with Curator Laura G. Einstein.
Deborah Weiss’ lyrically abstracted works are nature based, printed by the artist from her hand carved woodblocks. These unique woodcut prints merge landscape with abstraction incorporating delicate gradation of colors. Deborah states, “I use/reuse my woodblocks several times in a single print, cropping and rotating the carved block. Unlike traditional editioned woodcut prints, each resulting print is unique.” Weiss has exhibited throughout the United States and in China, her work is included in numerous private and public collections. She is a juried member of Boston Printmakers, Los Angeles Printmaking Society and Silvermine Guild. Deborah Weiss, a Ridgefield, CT resident has work in numerous private and public collections.
Deborah suggested the ceramicist Ann Mallory to be included in the exhibition noting Ann’s beautifully crafted ceramic pieces. In fact, Ann will premiere several pieces entitled, Bundlesat FAC. Ann Mallory states, “I favor clean volumes, minimal surface decoration and rightness of scale, which promotes a sense of well being, serenity, and interior balance auspicious for thought." In Ann’s most recent work, a series of enclosed forms are bound with aged wire, referenced as Bundles. In these, Mallory has created visual metaphors for the obligations and responsibilities that all of us carry and they define our lives. These sculptures start as soft, yielding clay and are finished after firing by being bound with aged twisted copper wire and weathered clamps that served for over a hundred years as lightening rod grounding-wire on a barn in Roxbury, CT. The wire was chosen for its aesthetic beauty as well as provenance by reminding us that life is very much grounded by what we choose to carry in our bundles.
Adam Waimon, a noteworthy glass artist was a natural choice for his organic and delicately carved sculptures in glass. Adam Waimon states that he is “committed to the blown glass form.” This is evident in his minimalist approach whereby he uses basic shapes and hand scribed/carved surfaces that he etches to create a multi-faceted surface with elegant incisions on the glass surface. He gathers his inspiration from a multitude of sources as diverse as microbiology to Art Deco.
The Directors Gallery will feature, Diane Kerner: Abstracted Landscapes. Diane explains her work, “This collection of work has been drawn from my interest in painting the sea, the coast and the many amazing aspects of water — from crashing surf to views of a calm and quiet pond. I am intrigued with exploring this subject matter not only in a somewhat realistic manner but also in an abstract mode, concentrating on colors and shapes on canvas as another way to express my individual response to landscapes.
Curator Laura G. Einstein states, “This beautiful exhibition of four very talented artists, together for the first time, is not to be missed!”
