The Modern Estate
When luxury-home builder Richard Donnelly and his wife, Linda, launched The Modern Estate in October 2006, they set out to create a regional shelter magazine with a unique point of view: the unfiltered perspective of professionals in the luxury-home field. Most of their writers, the founders decided, would be architects, builders, construction project managers, HVAC experts, and landscape and interior designers who constantly deal with the complexities of creating luxury homes—modern estates—in the New York–Connecticut area.

A year later, just as the first-anniversary issue went to press, the respected industry publication Folio: honored The Modern Estate with a 2007 Gold Eddie Award—signifying editorial excellence—for “Gift of a Master,” TME’s cover story on the Philip Johnson Glass House, in the Spring 2007 issue.

These days, notes Linda Donnelly, The Modern Estate’s Editor-in-Chief, all too many shelter magazines are short on substance. They offer a few glimpses inside a few handsome homes, an excitement of typefaces, and text blocks too short to provide information that homeowners can actually use in the maintenance and enhancement of their luxury residences. However, on everything from architectural style to green technology to heating systems to landscape architecture to interior design, The Modern Estate sets out to provide what other magazines lack: specific information by writers who have the expertise to offer the magazine’s readers trustworthy guidance.
